The Grimoire

The Origin Story of Magic Face Oil

Written by Raina McClellan

I spent the entirety of my 20’s singing songs for people, traveling the country in my car with some shampoo, conditioner and a bottle of that tingly peppermint castile soap we all relied upon back in the day. I still love that stuff, but it’s not a great face wash. I rarely wore sunscreen and almost never used a moisturizer.

That decade of my life concluded with the birth of my first child. The early years of parenthood left me with very little time for skincare. My face suffered.

When I started Folk Potions, I didn’t have a plan for what it would become. I had an idea for All Purpose Salve. I made it. I listed it on my etsy shop and gave some away to friends for the holidays. It was a fun side hustle.

A couple of months later, I was chatting with my friend, Kathie. She told me about a new trend: face oil. People were applying oils directly to their face in place of traditional moisturizers. My mind was blown.

Being a child of the 20th century, the idea of putting oil on your skin was a big no-no. There were countless ads on TV villainizing skin oil. There were shelves of harsh face washes, zit pads, and whatever else to scrub the oil away.

The thing is, skin naturally produces oil. If it’s removed with a product, the skin simply makes more.

Face oil made sense to me. What if I made one that was herb-infused? I filled a jar with some of my favorite flowers and herbs for skin health, dumped in a blend of plant-based carrier oils and set them on a shelf in my dining room.

Six weeks later, I opened the jar. I knew I had made something very special. Applying it for the first time made me realize how much I was missing a regular skincare ritual. I have used Magic Face Oil twice a day everyday since.

The recipe hasn’t changed much since that first jar. Magic Face Oil speaks for itself.

I hope you love it too.
